NIU Releases Latest Safety & Security Report

Northern Illinois University

There are a few things to take note of in Northern Illinois University’s most recent safety and security report.

According to the report, no hate crimes have been reported at NIU in two years. But you might notice drug law violations more than doubled from 2013 to 2014.

NIU police chief Tom Phillipssaid in a statement he attributes that to an increase in collaboration between NIU and DeKalb police. He says the joint goal is to crack down on illegal drug use and violent crime.

Phillips also says he hopes the slight increase in reported rape cases -- from 12 in 2013 to 15 in 2014 -- could be because of the university’s efforts to give support to survivors.

The Clery Actrequires all colleges and universities nationally to record campus crime statistics for murder, hate crimes and robbery. With the Violence Against Women Act going into effect last year, all schools must now report on data for crimes including rape, dating violence, and stalking.

According to NIU's report, 2013 was the first year data was collected for forcible sex offenses, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking.
