The last time NIU increased parking permit prices was in 2011. NIU officials say the hike is to help raise additional revenue for the $5 million backlog of necessary parking lot repairs.

The change affects students and faculty who wish to purchase parking permits.

Reserved parking prices were increased more than other permits; remote parking passes will now be free.

In addition to raising permit prices, NIU parking officials say their enforcement hours will change temporarily, effective immediately. Currently, those hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday; the new hours will be 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

There are about 20,000 students enrolled; there are 3,671 part- and full-time workers and more than 5,000 student workers employed at Northern Illinois University.
