NIU Meteorologist Says Winter Weather Will Not Be A Repeat Of Last Year

National Weather Service

Remember last year? Northern Illinois University meteorologist Gilbert Sebenste does.

“We had temperatures in the 40s, 50s, and 60s. We had thunderstorms with hail. That was in large part to the El Nino that was going on. Now we get the reverse and now we pay for it.”

The arctic blast is being felt across the Midwest.

“Well, more accurately, it is called 'arctic air.' That’s the air that originates basically from Siberia, the North Pole, northern Alaska, and then comes down into the Midwest. It happens pretty much every winter. Although last winter it was pretty scarce,” Sebenste said.

He says residents in northern Illinois can expect a few more  arctic intrusions over the next few months.

“This winter it looks like it is going to be probably average to colder than average. I am leaning to colder than average with above average snowfall.”

Sebenste says this bout of Arctic air is expected to last through Tuesday.
