NIU Leaders, DeKalb Officials Unite In Concerns Over Gunfire Near Campus

Susan Stephens

Northern Illinois University officials are working with DeKalb officials to deal with several recent reports of gunshots in the area north of campus over the past few weeks. Police are actively investigating the cases.

On Wednesday, Acting President Lisa Freeman issued an email to the campus community announcing increased security measures around campus. She says NIU Police have positioned a mobile command unit to enhance police presence and its ability to respond on- and off-campus.

Additionally, the Huskie Line Bus will make additional stops and offer extended evening hours.

Freeman says she has asked Housing staff to accommodate any student who lives off campus and wishes to move into a residence hall.

Residence halls will have secured access 24 hours a day and will require students to present their student identification card to gain access. All visitors not affiliated with the university will be required to provide identification.

Earlier this week, Chris McCord, Acting Executive Vice President and Provost, issued a campus-wide announcement addressing recent crime.

"As the Annie Glidden North area is the home to many of our students, we are concerned for their safety and their sense of well-being," McCord said Monday in the email to the campus community. "Moreover, as members of the DeKalb community, we are concerned for the safety and well-being of our neighbors."

There will be a series of meetings with students in the affected area to advise them on safety issues and make them aware of support resources.

The City of DeKalb already has been facilitating public discussion of the Annie Glidden North area. Another community meeting is scheduled Thursday night at the Westminster Presbyterian Church.
