WNIJ launched it's first "Three-Minute Fiction" contest in September, 2015 with a prompt issued by award-winning author, GK Wuori:I'm a curious person. No, I'm a nosey person. Nooo. I'm a snoop, and it's finally gotten me into trouble. We received more than 100 submissions. Wuori, a Pushcart Prize-winner, selected five authors and we invited them to our studios to record their stories. Wuori then selected another five authors for honorable mentions, and we include their readings in this archive. We welcome your comments to these stories. And if you talk about this series on social media, please use #WNIJReadWithME.WNIJ's "Three-Minute Fiction" was inspired by an NPR contest of the same name.

Mow, Drink, Man, Woman

Jamie Lieberman w/Brenda Puska

The protagonist in our next "Three-Minute Fiction" contest is a familiar one: a retired guy who maintains an immaculate yard and relaxes with a beer after putting the tools in the shed.

While he's past middle-age, he's far from dead. Or maybe you prefer the old "there may be snow on the mountaintop" metaphor. However you put it, he likes looking at women -- especially those younger and more attractive than his wife.

His neighbor mows her lawn on Tuesdays and, lately, does so in a bikini. Our hero sips his beer and watches her, which coincides nicely with our story prompt:

I'm a curious person. No, I'm a nosey person. Nooo. I'm a snoop, and it's finally gotten me intro trouble.

The prompt was issued last month by Pushcart Prize-winning author GK Wuori, who also selected the winning stories. Wuori intoduces today's story, "Yard Work," in the link below.

"Yard Work" is by Rockford author MaryAnn Presman. In the link below, you can see Presman reading her story.

"Three-Minute Fiction" wraps up Friday with a story called "Shattered." Listen during Morning Edition at 6:44 and 8:44. Then come back here for more info, including a video of author Tamara Gaumond reading her story.
