Illinois Tollway Plans To Replace Coin Buckets At Booths

Flickr User Marcin Wickary/CC 2.0

Illinois Tollway officials approved a contract yesterday that would replace the coin buckets at toll booths.

The Daily Herald reports they would be replaced by touch screen machines that also accept credit cards and bills.  I-Pass lanes have cut down on use of the coin buckets, and there are about 100 remaining at roadside booths.

The devices have been in operation for at least 20 years and are becoming more difficult to repair due to the lack of replacement parts.  The new machines would cost about $100,000 each, and officials hope to have the replacements done within one year of a full contract to be signed this spring.
