Illinois Legislator Receiving Cancer Treatment

An Illinois lawmaker announced he will receive treatment for cancer.

State Rep. Frank Mautino of Spring Valley says his doctor found a mass in his esophagus during a routine physical in January. The Democrat says he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer after a biopsy in February.

Mautino says doctors told him the cancer is 97 percent treatable. He says he's adjusted his treatment schedule so he can continue representing residents in both the 76th District and the State Capitol.

Mautino was appointed to office in 1991 following the death of his father, former state Rep. Richard Mautino, and served as House Deputy Majority Leader since 2011.
