A judge has ordered an April 12 hearing on the constitutionality of charges filed against the widow of a suburban Chicago police officer who killed himself and made it look like it was duty related.
Defense attorney Donald Morrison claims Lake County prosecutors have avoided detailing specific criminal acts Melodie Gliniewicz committed to be charged with conspiracy, unlawful use of charitable funds for personal gain and money laundering.
Prosecutor Scott Turk says the specific charges against the woman are highlighted in an FBI report already turned over to Morrison.
The 52-year-old Gliniewicz was indicted after her husband, Fox Lake Police Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz, committed suicide in September 2015. She has pleaded not guilty to charges she siphoned money from the village's youth policing program.
Authorities say Charles Gliniewicz staged his suicide because he feared discovery of his embezzlement from the youth program.
