Fox Lake Officer’s Family Investigated After Embezzled Funds Revealed

Fox Lake Police Department

Investigators are looking into the wife and son of an Illinois police lieutenant who killed himself during a probe of a youth program he oversaw. They are allegedly two of the individuals with whom he exchanged incriminating text messages, according to an official.

Authorities investigating the September death of Fox Lake Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz released documents containing some texts and Facebook messages he shared with others weeks before he died. The documents identify two of the recipients as Individual 1 and Individual 2.

The official, who was briefed on the investigation, says Individual 1 was Gliniewicz's wife. She suggests in one message the couple may “need to hide the funds somehow.”

The official says Individual 2 was Gliniewicz's son, who the officer warns that not repaying money spent on personal items could mean he “will be visiting me in JAIL!”

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly.

Gliniewicz also allegedly tried to meet with a “high-ranking gang member to put a hit” on Fox Lake village administrator Anne Marrin. That’s after Marrin started asking him questions about activity on the Explorer’s post account.

Lake County sheriff spokesman Chris Covelli told the Daily Heraldthat the potential hitman attempts are a theory. He says officials can't prove it.

Covelli also says cocaine was found in Gliniewicz’s desk. Covelli says investigators are still unsure of how the drugs got there.

The investigation surrounding the embezzlement and money laundering by Gliniewicz continues.
