First Illinois Deaths Related To West Nile Virus In 2014

Two elderly women in northern Illinois have died after contracting West Nile virus.

According to an Illinois Department of Public Health press release issued today, the women became ill in late August and early September.

These are the first known deaths related to the virus this year in Illinois. 15 human cases have been confirmed so far in 2014.

In 2013, 117 people contracted the virus and 11 died.
