A major overhaul of DeKalb County’s jail is on target to be finished by the summer of 2018. Sycamore’s city council got an update at its meeting this week on the progress of the $35-million jail expansion.
Mayor Ken Mundy says the jail campus is a large part of his city’s downtown: there are a lot of factors that could change the timing, but he was pleased with the update. He says the county presented a tentative timeline “so by the middle of summer, July, we should be underway! If all things work, the bidding process, and the bids are awarded, and the weather cooperates and so forth, it should be doable.”
The plan adds 60 beds with the potential for another 20. The jail currently can house 89 inmates. Most of the jail expansion is being paid for with fees generated by a controversial landfill expansion.
