DeKalb County Board Passes Moratorium On Wind And Solar Farms

The DeKalb County Board unanimously approved a moratorium on new wind and solar farms for 18 months, or until the county releases a sustainable energy plan.

The Daily Chronicle reports the board plans on using this time to assess the various effects wind towers would have on the community.  These include value of nearby properties, aesthetic considerations, and any consequences for wildlife.

Board Chair Mark Pietrowski Jr. says if the board isn't comfortable with passing an ordinance after this research period, it would have to repeal the moratorium and consider each special-use permit on an individual basis.

The moratorium doesn't prevent EDF Renewable Energy from building two 200-foot wind testing towers in South Grove Township near Kirkland.  However, the company would still have to make a choice whether to proceed with construction or wait through the assessment process.
