Computer Glitch Fixed At Motor Vehicle Facilities Statewide

Illinois Secretary of State

UPDATED: 6:03 a.m., Nov. 13

Drivers' license facilities across Illinois are up and running again after a computer glitch Wednesday.

Sec. of State spokesman Henry Haupt says the mainframe computer in Springfield wasn't properly communicating with and recording data entered from the terminals at the facilities. It's fixed now, and Haupt says there are no security concerns.

Customers who couldn't be served without a computer were given courtesy cards they could use on their next visit to get expedited service.

The Secretary of State's office says they hope the problem is fixed, and get things up and running as quickly as possible.

It's unclear what the problem is; something, says Sec. of State spokesman Henry Haupt, with the computer main frame housed in Springfield.

But Haupt says an IT team is troubleshooting it.

In the meanwhile, customers who showed up to take a driving test, renew a license or to get a state ID, may not be completely out of luck.

"Wherever possible, we're filling out paper forms with the information, which we can then input later into the computer, when it's up and running, long after the customers had left."

If that's not an option, Haupt says customers will get a "courtesy card" -- which will basically allow them to skip in line when they come back later.

When asked if there's any concern about a security breach, Haupt said safeguarding personal information is always a priority, and it's believed the problem is internal.
