Chicago City Council Holds Special Minimum Wage Meetings

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel wants to pre-empt state action on local minimum wages.

The City Council is planning special meetings to raise the city's minimum wage to 13 dollars an hour. A work force committee will meet today and a special council meeting is on Tuesday.

Officials are worried business groups will push for Springfield legislation that prohibits municipalities raising their minimum wage higher than the state's.

Legislators are scheduled to return to Springfield on Tuesday. They're expected to take up a measure to raise Illinois' wage to 10 dollars by July and 11 dollars by 2017.
