Cause Of Death For Former NIU, Cary-Grove Football Player Still To Be Determined

A former Northern Illinois University football player who died last week at the age of 29 had an enlarged heart, but the actual cause of death has yet to be determined.

Alex Kube was pronounced dead Wednesday night at Rockford Memorial Hospital.

Kube most recently was an assistant football coach at Rockford East High School. He had been a star linebacker for NIU and a football star at Cary-Grove High School, where he graduated in 2006.

Winnebago County Coroner Bill Hintz says an autopsy was performed Thursday.

“The next step with an autopsy is toxicology, which is standard," Hintz said. "Unfortunately, we don’t have our own laboratory, so it takes about two weeks for us to get our results back.”

Hintz says the only major finding his office saw to the naked eye in Kube’s autopsy was an enlarged heart. However, he says “that in itself doesn’t mean much” and that it’s “just one of their findings.”
