Boone County Tables Nonprofit Food Permit Fee Resolution

Boone County’s Health and Human Services Committee tabled a resolution to change the food service code.

Under the current code, nonprofit organizations don’t have to pay fees for food service permits.  The Register-Star reports the change would have removed this exemption, and given the health department about $22,000 per year.

The resolution was strongly opposed by nonprofits, mostly due to the costs. Some were also charged fees despite the exemption, and the county was required to refund the money.  The county’s environmental health director criticized the current exemption as a “bottomless pit of freebies.”
