Appeals Court Reinstates Wisconsin Voter ID Law

The US 7th Circuit Court of Appeals has reinstated the Wisconsin law that requires voters to have photo identification cards.

The court issued the order today, reversing an injunction put in place earlier this year:

Having read the briefs and heard oral argument, this court now stays the injunction issued by the district court. The State of Wisconsin may, if it wishes (and if it is appropriate under rules of state law), enforce the photo ID requirement in this November’s elections.

The court will issue a ruling on the case at a later, unspecified date.

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker also took action on the voter ID issue today. He approved new rules that will allow people without birth documentation, such as a birth certificate, to verify their birth information free of charge.
