Illinois State Representative Jeff Keicher wants residents to learn more about their property taxes.

The event is designed to educate residents about how local governments value their property, and in turn, how much is due in taxes. Keicher says it will also detail how residents can appeal the amount if they feel it’s inaccurate.

“There’s only a 30-day window once those assessment are issued in order for thoses appeals to take place," he said. "So if you want to have an impact on the current system, you’ve got to act quickly. And that’s what gets most people frustrated, is if you don’t do it within the 30-day window, it has to wait until the following year."

Keicher says the assessment process can also be confusing.

"It makes sense in the grander scheme, but it really hides a lot of the details that are going to be important to the consumer," he said. "If we were rewriting this today, I don’t think we could have it as confusing of a system as it is."

DeKalb County Clerk and Recorder Doug Johnson, Treasurer Christine Johnson, and Chief Assessment Officer Robin Brunchson will be on hand to explain the assessment process and answer questions. The seminar takes place Monday evening in Sycamore High School.
