Illinois Fracking Rules Delayed Until November

An Illinois legislative committee delayed voting on hydraulic fracturing rules until November.

The Joint Committee on Administrative Rules (JCAR) will decide if proposed rules for hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking, can go into effect.

Fracking is an oil and natural gas extraction process. It involves blasting a mixture of water, sand, and chemicals deep underground to crack rock, which releases the oil or gas.

JCAR first delayed action on the rules in September.

Illinois' Department of Natural Resources released those rules in late August.

If the committee does not vote on the rules by the November 15 deadline, the process will start over.
