NIU STEMFest Virtual This Year

Northern Illinois University

Northern Illinois University’s STEMFest celebrates the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The annual event usually draws large crowds to the NIU Convocation Center. Not the 2020 edition.

This year, STEMFest will culminate with a virtual celebration on October 31st from 10am to 2pm.

STEMFest organizer Dr. Kristin Brynteson noted that the online platform allows visitors to customize their STEM experience.

“STEM fest is kind of something you can go through at your own pace," she said. "You don’t have to leave your house, you can re-watch the videos that really interest you. Really, it’s STEMFest your way.”

And, Brynteson said, the virtual setting still offers audiences experiences and discussions to spark their wonder.

“We think that the online format does provide a nice alternative," she said, "and give that ‘exploring’ feel of STEM fest.”

The event will feature livestreamed presentations and demonstrations. This includes a Haunted STEM lab showcasing NIU research, and a STEM Quest ‘room’ featuring experts from various STEM fields. These guests hail from a number of organizations, including NASA, Fermilab and Argonne.

Other event highlights will include presentations on Amusement Park Physics, Engineering at Home, and an NIU student panel.
