Become A Volunteer

Volunteer efforts are essential and invaluable to WNIJ and WNIU. Join the generous, talented team of individuals who contribute their time to the station on a regular basis. Volunteering offers you an opportunity to see first-hand how public radio works and to meet new people in your community.
Volunteers participate in one or more of the following initiatives:

  1. Help with membership pledge drives: volunteers answer phones and take information from donors during the period when we call on listeners to support the station with financial donations.
  2. Help with the NIRIS program: the Northern Illinois Radio Information Service provides print information to blind and print-impaired citizens. Volunteers read newspapers and magazines for those who cannot read for themselves. These readings are broadcast to those who subscribe to the service.
  3. Help with administrative tasks: volunteers help to prepare large mailings, assist at events, take phone calls from donors/listeners, etc.
  4. Help in the newsroom: volunteer opportunities could range from helping with the all-important archiving of our past interviews, stories and broadcasts to assisting in news-gathering and production, depending on department needs and the volunteer's qualifications.

If you are interested in any of the opportunities listed, or if you have any related interests not mentioned here, please contact  Alex McConachie at amcconachie@niu.edu or 815.753.8000 with questions and ideas. There are plenty of ways we can accommodate your talents and interests.

To current and prospective volunteers, thank you for your support.

Northern Public Radio does offer internships, non-paid positions, which provide exposure to many aspects of public radio operations. Preference is given to applicants seeking internships for the purpose of receiving academic credit in a related field of study at Northern Illinois University.
