Social Media Privacy Rules Extended To Students

A new Illinois law aims to protect internet privacy for students. It was inspired by a similar law approved last year. In 2012, the state raised some eyebrows when it adopted a law that bars employers from asking job applicants their social media log-in information. Starting in January, a new statue establishes similar restrictions for colleges and universities.

The bill's chief sponsor, House Democrat LaShawn Ford of Chicago, says the main goal is to protect prospective students during the screening process.

The bill was co-sponsored by West Chicago Republican Mike Fortner. He says schools of all levels will still have some room to maneuver in certain situations.

“If they they feel the page contains evidence that school code is being violated, they have the right to request that information,” Fornter said.

However, K-through 12 schools must notify students and parents about this policy.
