The United States Postal Service announced Thursday that it will soon begin consolidating dozens of mail processing facilities across the country. Part of Rockford's operations will be transferred to the Carol Stream distribution center. The other half will be absorbed by the facility in Palatine.

The school board is preparing to vote on the proposal later this month. Supporters hope it will boost the district's graduation rate.

For the second day in a row, classes are canceled in the Rockford Public School district.  Teachers remain on strike after Thursday's bargaining session failed to produce a contract agreement.
