Felony theft charges have been thrown out against two more NIU employees.

Charges have been dropped against one of Northern Illinois University’s top financial officials. University controller Keith Jackson was charged last year with two felonies and one misdemeanor related to the so-called “coffee fund” scandal.

It was five years ago today that five Northern Illinois University students were murdered in a crowded classroom. 


It was a disappointing end to an incredible season for Northern Illinois University's football team. The Florida State Seminoles bottled up the Huskies offense to win the Discover Orange Bowl, 31 to 10. 

Twenty-two Northern Illinois University students face arrest in the hazing death of fellow student David Bogenberger.  The 19 year old was found dead in a bed at the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity house November 2nd.

Deputy Police Chief takes the reins

Northern Illinois University has placed its police chief on administrative leave. Chief Donald Grady and Lt. Kartik Ramakrishnan are facing disciplinary proceedings by the university. Deputy Chief of Police Darren Mitchell, a member of the NIU Police Department since 2000 who also serves as executive director of the Office of Emergency Management and Planning, was named Sunday to take command of the 38-member force until an acting chief is named.

A DeKalb County judge could decide today whether to proceed with a student’s sexual assault case against a former Northern Illinois University police officer. 

Northern Illinois University’s long-time president is stepping down at the end of the academic year. John Peters made the announcement at his annual State of the University address Thursday.

The annual ritual of Move-In Day took control of Northern Illinois University's campus today. An estimated 2,500 students will spend the evening unpacking and getting to know their new neighbors. It took 1,000 student volunteers, 100 staff and faculty members, and of course, hundreds of moms, dads, and friends to get their stuff from the curb to the dorm room. Eventually, 5,000 students will make their way into the residence halls.

Students across Illinois are making their way back to school in the coming weeks. Yesterday, Northern Illinois University’s incoming law students got a special welcome.

This fall’s crop of freshmen at Northern Illinois University can expect to pay $200 more in tuition per semester than last year’s freshmen. The NIU Board of Trustees approved a tuition increase of 4.75% at its meeting Thursday.

An open house and a rededication ceremony on Sunday, Feb. 12, marked the formal reopening of Cole Hall on the Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. The building was closed after a gunman killed five others and himself nearly four years ago in a lecture room.

A nineteen-year-old man from Markham, Illinois has been arrested in this morning's shooting death of a Northern Illinois University student. Chaz Thrailkill was arrested late this morning in DeKalb, more than eight hours after the shooting near campus. Thrailkill is charged with first degree murder and is being held on three million dollars bond in the DeKalb County Jail.
