Another Delay Will Be Sought In Next Sheley Murder Trial

A delay will be requested for the upcoming murder trial of convicted killer Nicholas T. Sheley of Sterling.

Defense attorney Jeremy Karlin, of Galesburg, will ask Rock Island Circuit Judge F. Michael Meersman, at a hearing Friday for the fourth delay in Sheley’s first Whiteside County murder trial.

The case, scheduled to go to trial Sept. 10, also would be the first test of active news media presence in a Whiteside County court under the cameras-in-the-courtroom initiative of the Illinois Supreme Court.

Winnebago-Boone courts next for cameras and microphones

Illinois Supreme Court Chief Justice Thomas Kilbride was the keynote speaker at the Illinois News Broadcasters Association's spring 2012 convention.

The 17th Judicial Circuit, comprising Winnebago and Boone Counties in northern Illinois, will be the next courts to permit news media cameras and recording devices during trials.

Illinois Supreme Court Chief Justice Thomas L. Kilbride announced the action Saturday during an address to the Illinois News Broadcasters Association convention in Macomb. He said the order will be issued today.

Sterling man gets life in first of eight murder trials

A Sterling man accused of killing eight people in two states in 2008 has been sentenced to life in prison without parole.  Nicholas Sheley was sentenced today for the murder of 65-year-old Ronald Randall of Galesburg.
