The 16th District Republican visited a new lab that recently opened at NIU. Officials hope the hands-on experience for students and researchers will prepare people for labs like Batavia’s Fermilab and Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont, IL.

Kinzinger is a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. He said he wanted to meet people who interact with federal funding and STEM programs.

An immigration lawyer from Rockford will take on incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger in the race for the 16th Congressional district this fall.

Sara Dady beat three other candidates to win the Democratic nomination. She says her first priority, now that the primary is over, is to get Kinzinger to commit to at least four debates.

As for issues, Dady says, “I know, as a businesswoman, we need universal health care in this country. Not only did I lose my mother because she didn’t have access to health care, I know the burden that it is on small businesses.”

WNIJ News continues its look at important primary election races in northern Illinois. In this Friday Forum, WNIJ’s Dan Klefstad talks with Northern Illinois University Prof. Scot Schraufnagel, chair of the Department of Political Science, about the contests in both parties in the 16th Illinois Congressional District, which covers about half of the WNIJ listening area.

U.S. Congress

Although they are from different political parties, two members of Congress from northern Illinois expressed remarkably similar sentiments Monday about the Senate action attempting to end the government shutdown and what lies ahead.

In separate interviews with WNIJ News, Republican Adam Kinzinger of the 16th District and Democrat Cheri Bustos of the 17th District both agreed that it is better to have the government open in order to move forward.

Neither of them liked the string of short-term continuing budget resolutions that led to the three-day shutdown.

Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara joined local Dreamers and leaders on a conference call Thursday to discuss why a legislative solution for Dreamers is so urgent for Illinois and America, and to call on U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, to pass a standalone Dream Act.

“We have invested in these young people through education, and they’re truly paying us back with being teachers in our community, engineers, small business owners,” McNamara said on the call. “I just don’t want to see us squander their talents and penalize cities such as Rockford and our entire nation. “

Republican U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger is facing challenges in the 16th Illinois Congressional District from a local Democrat and his own party.

Rockford-based Nathan Arroyave has said he plans to run a “very progressive” campaign. Like Bernie Sanders, Arroyave wants a single-payer health-care system and a $15 minimum hourly wage.

House Speaker Paul Ryan announced this week that he will not yet support Donald Trump in his

presidential run.  In response, Trump said he is not ready to support Ryan's agenda either.

It appears Congressman Adam Kinzinger (R-IL, 16th) will also stay away from Trump's bid for now.

The field has narrowed in two northern Illinois contests on the March 15th primary ballot.

Rockford business consultant Colin McGroarty’s challenge to incumbent Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger is over.

His nominating petitions were challenged by Suzy Brown and David Welter, both of Morris in Grundy County, and he has been removed from the March primary ballot.

In the 67th Illinois House District, both challengers to incumbent Democrat Litesa Wallace also have been removed.

Illinois Lawmakers Back Obama's Action

President Obama's statement on Syria has drawn responses from Illinois' elected representatives.

On Saturday, the president said the White House plans to take military action against Syria's regime for its use of chemical weapons, but added that he first will  seek approval from Congress.

16th District Congressman Adam Kinzinger says if he is asked to go to Washington right away, he would support taking military action. But the Republican says the longer it takes to get approval, the action taken by U.S. forces becomes less effective.
