Top Illinois Democrat Says She's Resigning To Allow For New Leadership

repnekritz.org

One of the top  Democrats in the Illinois House is resigning. Democratic Representative Elaine Nekritz is stepping down after nearly 15 years in the General Assembly.

She’s helped pass major legislation on state pensions and criminal justice — and has a record of working to find bipartisan support for legislation.

“We’ve each gone to our respective corners on the budget impasse,” she said. “But I think when it comes to regular, ordinary, run-of-the-mill legislation that goes through, we still work across the aisle very well, and I still feel like folks work pretty hard at developing relationships on both sides of the aisle."

Nekritz says the budget impasse has been “frustrating,” but that’s not the main reason she’s leaving. She says 15 years is long enough to occupy a seat in the legislature, and it’s time for “fresh, new leadership.”

Local Democratic Party officials will appoint someone to fill out the rest of her term, which runs through January 2019.
