State Of The State? Gov. Rauner Talks Challenges And Game Plan Wednesday

Carl Nelson/WNIJ

Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner delivers his second State of the State address tomorrow.

If you're curious about what Rauner will say, you're not alone. So is Senate President John Cullerton, a Democrat.

"Eager to hear what the governor's plans are on Wednesday, but it's in bad shape, and we want to change it. "Social service programs are suffering. High school counselors are telling the seniors not to go to school in Illinois because we haven't funded our schools. We have a growing deficit. We have been downgraded. And that is not a business friendly environment in my opinion."

It's been nearly eight months since Illinois had a budget. Earlier this week, the governor called that an "outrage." Rauner says he's committed to his plans for fundamental change.

He also says Illinois has had important achievements in the year since he took office.

"We'll also talk about our challenges, and our failings so far. And lay out a game plan for what we'd like to do in the coming 12 months."

Rauner's speech is scheduled for noon, before a joint session of the General Assembly. You can listen to it live on 89.5 WNIJ and wnij.org.
