State Representative Chuck Jefferson says he’s retiring because it’s time to let someone younger take on the position. The Democrat held a retirement party of sorts at the State of Illinois building in Rockford’s downtown.
Jefferson’s family and friends stood up at the end of his speech to sing Na, Na, Hey, Hey, Kiss Him Goodbye. The sense was that they were happy to see him leave the long commutes, the rigors of campaigning, and all of the chores that go along with the job. That’s pretty much what Jefferson himself said was behind his decision to retire this week. And he stressed retire, not resign.
The Winnebago County Democratic Central committee will choose someone to fill out the 67th district term, which is up for election in November. The timing of Jefferson’s decision allows his replacement to get more public exposure if the committee chooses to run that person in the fall.
