Some DeKalb Residents Petitioning For Metra Expansion

Some DeKalb residents are petitioning for the Metra system to offer service to the city.

Supporters argue that it’s difficult for NIU students and DeKalb residents without cars to reach the nearest Metra train station in Elburn.  The Daily Chronicle reports the plan faces financial hurdles.  Specifically, DeKalb would need to contribute sales tax to the Regional Transportation Authority.  This group manages Metra and currently serves Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will counties.

DeKalb County’s Board Chairman Mark Pietrowski Jr. says a more financially feasible option would be to expand shuttle service between NIU and Elburn.  That service currently runs Friday and Sunday.

So far, the petition has around 1,000 supporters.
