Rockford City Council Passes Amerock Plan

City of Rockford

Rockford’s city council narrowly approved the Amerock hotel project.  The Register Star reports it was approved 7-6.

The city previously approved plans for the project, which called for the city to pay for construction of a parking deck, train depot, and covered walkway, along with other financial incentives. The third plan would have Rockford pay $12.5 million for a conference center instead.  Gary Gorman, the developer, would also build a hotel in the former factory.

Supporters included downtown business owners, as well as construction and trade workers.  Opponents were concerned the deal gives too many subsidies to Gorman.  Construction could begin this summer.
