Rauner Wants To Improve State's Political Climate But Stays Quiet On Re-Election Plans

Phil Masterton / WNIJ

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner is talking about building a movement to improve the state’s political and economic climate.

But he still wouldn’t say whether he will run for re-election.

Several Republican lawmakers say Rauner lost their support after the governor signed a bill last week that allows state money to help pay for abortions.

One said a primary challenger is inevitable, though nobody has yet stepped forward.

But Rauner hasn’t actually said he’s running for re-election, and he was coy about it again Tuesday. Rauner did say he wants to start a non-partisan movement.

“I believe we can do this in the coming months. I will do everything I can to help lead that movement,” he said. “We need to change. Our system is broken. We need dramatic change.”

A campaign spokeswoman says Rauner is announcing his re-election campaign soon.
