NIU Media Services

NIU president John Peters isn’t the only one saying goodbye to the university at the end of June…so is his wife, Barbara Cole Peters.

Barbara Peters discusses how researching her book and understanding NIU history helped her deal with the school's 2008 shooting tragedy.

But she’s staying involved with the school through her four-part book series called “Women at Northern: Our Witnesses to History.” The first volume was released last week and uses archival letters and articles to tell the stories of the earliest years, when NIU was a teaching college known as Northern Illinois State Normal School. WNIJ’s Susan Stephens spoke with Peters about her research.

Barbara Cole Peters is the author of “Women at Northern.” NIU is hosting a farewell party for her from 3 til 5 this afternoon in Adams Hall

Susan is an award-winning reporter/writer at her favorite radio station. She's also WNIJ's Perspectives editor, Under Rocks contributor, and local host of All Things Considered.
