NIU Makes Top 100 List of Safest Colleges In America

NIU

Northern Illinois University has been named to the Safest Colleges in America 2017  Top 100 list by the National Council for Home Safety and Security.

The DeKalb campus was ranked 65 on the list, with only three other Illinois institutions ranked higher:

  • Northwestern University in Evanston at 41
  • Illinois State University in Normal at 33
  • Chamberlain College of Nursing in Addison at 24

Chicago-based campuses took up half of the “bottom 10” in the Top 100.  DeVry University, Loyola University, DePaul University, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and the University of Chicago ranked 91st through 95th, respectively.

Also making the Top 100 list were the University of Illinois flagship campus at 78 and Southern Illinois University at 86.

Only two Wisconsin campuses made the Top 100 list, and both of them are in the state capital, Madison. The University of Wisconsin ranked at 69, and the Madison Area Technical College came in at 68.

The top school on the list is the University of New Hampshire; the University of Georgia came in at 100.

The National Council for Home Safety and Security created the list with data from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting and the National Center for Education Statistics.

They assessed 2,167 U.S. colleges and universities with a student population greater than 15,000.

This is the second consecutive year that NIU has received national recognition for community safety. In 2016, NIU was recognized by College Choice as one of the 50 Safest Large Colleges and Universities in America.
