Local official says property tax trend to continue

DeKalb County treasurer predicts additional rate increases and lower assessments for the next couple of taxing cycles.

Illinois residents are seeing their property tax bills arrive in the mail. In DeKalb County, officials say across the board, most taxing districts raised their rates this year amid lower assessments. Treasurer Mark Todd says this trend won't be going away anytime soon.

"Anyone who's been following what's been happening in local real estate can come to the conclusion that values in the three year average will still be in a negative in terms of decreasing in values."

Todd says there are ways to keep your tax bill lower. He says property owners need to make sure they're taking advantage of all the exemptions available to them.
