Illinois And Wisconsin Rank In Top Third In Energy Efficiency

wallethub.com

Both Illinois and Wisconsin made the top third in a recent ranking of states on energy efficiency.

For National Energy Awareness Month this month, WalletHubgleaned data from several federal sources to calculate Home Energy Efficiency and Auto Energy Efficiency among the 48 contiguous states. Alaska and Hawaii were excluded because of a lack of data.

Illinois ranked 15th overall and Wisconsin finished in 8th. Among neighboring states, Iowa was 28th, Indiana was 31st, and Missouri was 35th.

Illinois ranks 4th among the 48 states for transportation efficiency – that is, annual vehicle miles driven per capita – but drops into the lower quarter at 38th for vehicle-fuel efficiency, a measure of miles per gallon. Wisconsin was 29th in transportation efficiency.

The Illinois rank for home-energy efficiency is just above average at 21st. That’s based on Total Residential Energy Consumption per Capita divided by Annual Degree Days.

Wisconsin topped Illinois in both categories, ranking 11th for vehicle-fuel efficiency and 7th for home energy efficiency.

Illinois came in at 29th in vehicle fuel efficiency based on total miles driven annually and total gallons of fuel consumed.

New York was the best state overall and had the best auto energy efficiency. Vermont was second overall, with the best home energy efficiency. South Carolina came up dead last in the overall ranking and the home efficiency ranking.
