DeKalb Police Investigating NIU Student's Report Of Racial Harassment

NIU

A Northern Illinois University student has reported that four men in a truck harassed him, using racial slurs and displaying a shotgun and a Nazi flag, and the university confirms that police are investigating.

NIU learned on Friday of a Facebook post about the alleged incident, which took place during the noon hour Thursday just off campus in a parking lot in the 100 block of North Annie Glidden Road. The student was not injured.

According to an NIU public safety bulletin issued Saturday evening, NIU police brought DeKalb Police in on the investigation.

The student described the suspects as four white men around the age of 20 in a silver pickup truck. They displayed Nazi and Confederate flags. The student says they used racial epithets and told him he didn't "belong in our town."

NIU issued a public statement Saturday night:

"NIU takes all matters regarding the safety and security of our university community very seriously. Discrimination, hate speech, harassment, and intimidation are unacceptable and violate all that we value as a university. Should any student, faculty or staff member be the victim of a crime, feel unsafe or have concerns, we ask that you immediately contact NIU Police, utilize one of our supportive services and register incidents of bias."
