The Chicago Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations is calling on state and federal law enforcement authorities to investigate an alleged assault on a Muslim woman in DeKalb.
The group says the woman was wearing Islamic attire when a man approached her while she was shopping at the DeKalb WalMart. He allegedly began shouting “Muslims are not welcome in this country” and “Americans don’t want her here.”
The woman reportedly began trying to take a photo of the man with her phone to show to police. That’s when the alleged attacker walked toward her and pulled her clothing.
DeKalb Police Commander Steve Lekkas said police are investigating and consulting with the DeKalb County State’s Attorney to determine appropriate charges. However, no arrests have been made.
CAIR cites recent statistics from the FBI, indicating nearly a quarter of the victims of anti-religious hate crimes last year were Muslim.
