NIU instructor returns to work

DeKalb, IL – It's the first day back at work for Northern Illinois University's faculty and staff, five days after a gunman killed five students and injured 16 others. NIU employees will be trained this week to help students, who return to campus next Monday. But even with the help of 300 volunteer counselors, it won't be an easy task.

WNIJ's Susan Stephens spoke with Patty Rieman. She was teaching an education class on campus Thursday when she learned of the shooting.

It has been four days since a former NIU student burst intp a classroom and shot 22 people...including himself. The hunting of a candidate

DeKalb, IL – Illinois' primary is just about a month away and candidates in the 14th Congressional District are pushing their names for their party's nomination. That is, almost all of the candidates. There's still one who's an unknown not only to voters, but also to the other candidates, political insiders, and even elections officials. WNIJ's Tony Arnold has been trying to track him down for months now and has this report on his hunt for the political dark horse of the 14th District.

Hastert's hold on the 14th

DeKalb, IL – Republican Dennis Hastert says he'll retire from Congress before the end of the year. He leaves behind a long legacy in both Illinois and U-S politics. Hastert was the Speaker of the House longer than any other Republican in history. He also leaves behind victories over eleven Democratic opponents. Former Governor goes to prison

Oxford, WI – He's been called Secretary of State and Governor - now his title is federal prisoner 16627-424. Illinois Republican George Ryan reported to federal prison in rural Wisconsin Wednesday. WNIJ's Tony Arnold reports.
