A new session of the Illinois General Assembly begins Wednesday, when candidates who won in November's elections take the oath of office. The outgoing class of legislators left the incoming one with quite a burden. On Tuesday, the previous General Assembly adjourned without doing anything to address the state's massive pension woes. However, there were some last minute attempts.

There’s no deal on a pension reform plan at the Illinois Capitol…yet.

The Illinois House adjourned without a floor vote on a contentious plan to change the state’s troubled public employee pension system. An Illinois House committee today gave bi-partisan approval to a plan sponsored by Representative Elaine Nekritz. She says she expects it to be called for a vote by the House Tuesday, at the earliest.

Senate bows out of pension reform discussion

Both chambers consider limiting reform to lawmakesrs only

No pension legislation will move through the General Assembly today.

Legislators convened in Springfield for a special session on pensions, but the Senate has already adjourned without taking up any measures. Their website says the next session will be Nov. 27.

The Illinois House was still in session at 5 p.m.

Frustrated State Rep. Winters moves retirement forward to Tuesday

State Rep. Dave Winters, R-Shirland, citing frustration over the pension-reform impasse in the Illinois General Assembly, today announced that his retirement from the Illinois House of Representatives will take effect Tuesday, July 31.

Rep. Nekritz expects pension reform will be post-election

Illinois State Rep. Elaine Nekritz, D-Northbrook, doesn’t expect lawmakers to act on pension reform until after the Nov. 6 general election, though Gov. Pat Quinn said they should be ready to return to Springfield this summer to work on the contentious issue.
